Jing-mei Woo - Is the narrotor that links everything together, she could be considered the main character of the novel. Jing-mei is the newest member of a club called The Joy luck Club, taking her mothers place after her death. Jing-mei is given a task by members of the club to find her mothers long lost twin daughters, and tell them the story of their mothers life.
Suyuan Woo - Jing-mei's mother and founder of the Joy Luck Club. Loses her other two twin daughters while travelling to America.
An-mei Hsu - A member of the Joy Luck Club and mother of Rose Hsu. She lost most of her faith in God after her youngest childs death but does believe in will.
Rose Hsu Jordan - Daughter of An-mei Hsu, and married to Ted Jordan against her mothers wishes. When she is unable to make her own desicions and stick up for herself, their marriage falls apart.
Lindo Jong - A member of the Joy Luck Club and mother of Waverly Jong. Feels that she has deprived her daughter of her chinese identity by giving her so many American opportunities.
Waverly Jong - Daughter of Lindo Jong. She is very successful, always winning chess tournaments and growing up to be an attourney. Jing-mei (main narrator) has always been jelous of her.
Ying-ying St.Clair - A member of The Joy Luck Club. Used to be very indipendant but now, she barely speaks her mind and lets her husband talk and translate for her.
Lena St.Clair - Ying-ying's only daughter. She ends up in an unhappy marriage with a man named Harold Livonty, she develops the same patterns of her mother such as never speaking up for herself.
